ITV mini-series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, based on the real life story of the Horizon scandal, is back in the news today after former Post Office boss Paula Vennells broke down in tears.
She sobbed as she apologised for telling MPs the Post Office was successful in every court case against sub-postmasters - the first time she has publicly spoken about her role in the scandal for nearly a decade.The miscarriage of justice has been described as “the most widespread in British legal history” and the ITV drama has already been viewed by nine million people.
The four-part mini series follows several Post Office employees who were caught up in the scandal as they attempt to get justice.The plot centres around Alan Bates, a real life subpostmaster from Wales, as he works to lead a campaign to reveal the scandal.
What was the Post Office scandal? The scandal first arose when the Post Office began using a new computer system called Horizon.The software began causing accounting errors and wrongfully declared hundreds of subpostmasters as being in a deficit.This meant their accounts didn’t balance out and alleged that money was missing.
