Donald Trump‘s address to a joint session of Congress was about what you would expect it to be: full of boasts and grand pronouncements, laced with long-debunked claims and sprinkled with moments for reality TV attention spans.
In the chamber, the atmosphere for Tuesday’s speech was much more caustic this time around, not just for Trump, who chided Democrats for not getting on board and applauding him, and the opposition party, with many of the members booing and brandishing signs calling out the president and Elon Musk.
One member, Rep. Al Green (D-TX), was booted from the chamber after he refused to sit down and stop heckling at the outset of Trump’s address.
The contrast between Trump’s first term and his second was apparent right from the start, as Democrats did not participate in the traditional escorting of the president.
