As the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge waved from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, their happiness was tangible.
With Kate radiant in her lace and satin dress and William dashing in a scarlet military uniform, the watching crowd roared as they shared a kiss – and then another.
Commentators concluded that the second, spontaneous kiss was a clear symbol of a modern royal romance: here was a couple who seemed refreshingly free of stuffy protocol of the past. “This was not just a kiss for the cameras; this was true love, and everyone watching, including the estimated 2 billion glued to their televisions around the world, knew it,” says author Robert Jobson. “Everyone present could feel something special was beginning.” The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in April 2011 broke the mould for other reasons too, as Kate Middleton hailed from a middle-class family and was the first so-called “commoner” in 350 years to marry a future king.
But their marriage was far from a whirlwind affair, and they had dated on and off for seven years before William proposed in November 2010.
