The short time frame may have helped generate intensity, but left some doubt in its star’s mind: Gyllenhaal confides in Gaga that he wished he could have gone back and redone parts of his performance.

Gaga had her own recent experience of working with a decisive director: Ridley Scott, of “House of Gucci,” also moves quickly behind the camera.
