Zirkzee was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo just after the 30-minute mark on Monday night against Newcastle. As he left the field, there was audible jeers from some home supporters - followed by a spattering of boos as the Dutch forward made his way to the substitutes bench.
Once there, he picked up a coat and headed to the tunnel before emerging a few minutes later to watch the rest of the match from the dugout.
That was a new low for Zirkzee - in what has been a difficult few months at United - and it was hard not to feel sympathy for the 23-year-old.
