Having faced silence from their owners for almost two decades, Manchester United fans sense change is coming. In December the protracted deal for the purchase of a minority stake in Manchester United was agreed, with British billionaire and INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe seeing his £1.3bn deal for 27.7 per cent of the club ratified last month.

While the purchase of a minority stake may have seemed on the face of it as having limited impact given that the unpopular Glazer family remained the majority shareholders, the fact that football oversight and strategy around what happens with Old Trafford was handed over to Ratcliffe pointed to a reason to have some hope, even if the Glazers were to remain in situ. Given the silence from ownership that United have had to contend with throughout the Glazers’ reign, having a line of dialogue with those at the top has been most welcome, with Ratcliffe already achieving more in a day in terms of fan relationships than the US owners could muster in nearly 20 years.

Speaking on the first day of the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London, Andy Green, finance director of the Manchester United Supporters Trust, said: “Obviously, the Glazers didn’t speak to the fans for 20 years.
