The Gotham Film & Media Institute’s executive director Jeffrey Sharp and deputy director Kia Brooks will announce the nominations via Variety’s YouTube channel on Tuesday, Oct.
24, at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET. The awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 27 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Ben Affleck’s “Air” will receive the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute.
The sports drama-comedy tells the story of Nike’s partnership with Michael Jordan in creating the revolutionary Air Jordan brand, starring Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman and Viola Davis. “Both gripping and hilarious, ‘Air’ is a deeply refreshing reminder to the film industry that audiences respond to smart, original narratives,” Sharp said. “By capturing the dramatic story behind the most monumental partnership in the history of sports marketing, the film highlights the power of knowing your worth and using that knowledge to take the right risks.
We are privileged to honor both the story behind a legend and the ‘Air’ team who brought that story to life with the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute.” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” which follows the life of conductor Leonard Bernstein, will receive the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute. “Rustin,” about civil rights leader Bayard Rustin from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground, will receive the Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice.
