With temperatures reaching 40C in parts of the country this week, keeping ourselves cool is proving to be difficult. Keeping our cats’ temperatures as low as possible represents an even greater challenge for those responsible.

The popular pets have a limited capacity to cool off by sweating, making the role of the owners even more important. When extreme heat arrives, cats are at an even greater risk of heatstroke, potentially proving fatal.

Signs of heatstroke include panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, dizziness and fever, and immediate action should be taken if your cat elicits these signs, with the aim being to get your cat’s body temperature back to normal.

In this scenario, you should call your vet and follow their advice, ensuring you don’t do anything to escalate the problem in the meantime - including using ice or very cold water.
