The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that the clearance time for people challenging their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) award decision is now 39 working days.

The Department said this was down to improvements in “processes and increasing decision-making capacity”. The latest figures show that during the 2022/23 financial year, some 5,300 people successfully challenged the DWP over its initial PIP award decision.

Of that total, some 1,500 claimants have also been awarded at least one enhanced payment rate of either the daily living or mobility component of the disability benefit through the Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) process. Some 28 per cent of people awarded PIP at the Mandatory Reconsideration stage, following an initial decision to not award PIP, received at least one enhanced component.

However, it's important to be aware that the number of people claiming PIP has now hit a record-breaking high of more than 3.5 million and as a result, new claims are being prioritised over award reviews for existing claimants - but this will not impact the MR process.
