Bury council’s budget proposals include dimming thousands of street lights and possible charges at 40 currently free car parks.
The council’s Labour leadership said it was taking all necessary measures to set a balanced budget for 2025/26 which ‘also protects public services’.
The authority had been forecasting a financial gap of £19.5m for the next financial year, but this has been reduced to £5.8m, following a more generous than expected government funding settlement.
The budget proposals include an increase in council tax and other changes which will hit residents in the pocket. Council tax is set to rise by five per cent, which would add £125 to yearly bills for a typical Band D household.
