A shock announcement from Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles had sought treatment for an enlarged prostate, with the news being "beneficial for public knowledge", a royal expert said.
In two statements on Wednesday, 17 January, it was announced that Kate Middleton was recovering from abdominal surgery and that His Majesty needed treatment for an enlarged prostate. The two announcements, released within minutes of each other, came as a surprise as the health of senior members of the Royal Family is rarely disclosed to the public.
According to royal expert Tessa Dunlop, the statement about Charles' health stops "speculation" and it was in the interest of "public knowledge" to know, a type of "messaging for the NHS".
Speaking exclusively to OK! the historian, writer and broadcaster said: "It was beneficial for public knowledge to speak out about the prostate. "It's procedural and men don't check their prostates enough." Charles is said to have been keen to share details of his diagnosis to encourage other men to get checked, as Benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is common in men aged over 50, while the Princess of Wales' procedure was not disclosed.
