The Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history, with the 1944 battle laying the foundation for an Allied victory.
Troops from the UK, the US, Canada and France attacked German forces on the beaches at Normandy in northern France on June 6, 1944.
Not many lucky enough to survive the landings remain with us today, the 80th anniversary of those key landings across five beaches in Normandy which marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe from the grip of the Nazis.
While events to mark the anniversary have been taking place in France, the occasion is also being marked by commemorations in the UK and across Greater Manchester.
