The UK has experienced its hottest day on record, with the temperature reaching 39.1C in Charlwood, Surrey today, according to provisional Met Office figures.
The previous UK record was 38.7C, recorded in Cambridge University Botanic Garden on 25 July 2019. The nation also experienced its warmest night on record on Monday (July 18) as the extreme heat saw temperatures remaining in the mid-20s.
The Met Office said: “A temperature of 39.1C has provisionally been recorded at Charlwood, Surrey. If confirmed, this will be the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK.
Temperatures are likely to rise further through today.” Earlier today the Met Office tweeted: “It has provisionally been the warmest night on record in the UK.
