Yet years of underinvestment have seen its Victoria-era estate fall into a tired, dilapidated state. Earlier this year, an MP reported how theatres at the hospital were closed for over a month after a ceiling collapsed.
Plans for a long-awaited revamp first emerged back in 2019, and the-then Prime Minsiter Boris Johnson vowed to rebuild the site following his election victory later that year.
