Ministers must seize a ‘once in a generation opportunity’ to tackle rough sleeping in the wake of the Covid lockdown, Sir Keir Starmer and Labour mayors have warned - or homeless people housed during the pandemic so far could end up back on the streets.
A statement signed by the Labour leader and mayors including Andy Burnham and Sadiq Khan highlights that around 5,000 street homeless have been accommodated during the pandemic, as both the government and local authorities sought to protect them from the virus.
However they say that ministers have so far failed to promise longer term housing for those people, calling for a ‘dedicated funding package’ to ensure that can now happen.
