Hollywood director Guillermo del Toro shares 'love' for Scotland as he films Frankenstein adaptation in Aberdeenshire

Award winning director Guillermo del Toro has announced that he is staying in Scotland while filming for his upcoming Frankenstein film is currently underway at a sprawling Aberdeenshire estate.

The Hollywood film director, who has been very vocal about his love for Scotland, is staying at a haunted 1800s hotel in Aberdeen while Dunecht House is being used as a setting for an upcoming Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous chilling tale.Guillermo, 59, who specialises in fairytale and horror genres, previously revealed that filming would take place in Scotland as he was spotted scouting out different locations across the country in a series of social media posts last year.However, Glasgow and Edinburgh were the only two cities confirmed so a sign outside Dunecht House referencing Prodigal Father crews, the name of the latest production by director Guillermo del Toro, came as a surprise to locals.Dunecht House, which is a category A-listed building, is a stately home on the Dunecht estate made up of 24 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms.The impressive abode was initially built in 1820 for William Forbes whose family had owned the estate since the 15th century.

Cranes, vans and film crew were all seen busy at work outside the estate earlier this week with the film likely to be released in 2025.The director is believed to have been working on an adaptation for over a decade, previously describing Mary Shelley’s gothic creation as his favourite book of all time.Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young budding scientist who gives life to a creature of his own creation in an unorthodox scientific experiment.The upcoming adaptation features a high-profile cast including Saltburn star Jacob Elordi, Moon Knight
