Former Scotland manager George Burley has been diagnosed with cancer. The 68-year-old, who managed the national team 14 times between 2008 and 2009, confirmed the news in a statement issued through former club, Ipswich Town.Burley - who also managed a number of other teams including Ayr United, Hearts, Derby County, Southampton and Crystal Palace - said he fell ill earlier this year before undergoing treatment.
He has since received a diagnosis and says he is doing everything he can to fight the disease. Burley said: "After feeling unwell earlier this year, I have recently received a diagnosis and I am taking positive action to fight the disease.
It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now. In fact, I am able to get to matches at Portman Road and I am enjoying watching the team playing back in the Premier League."Burley most successful spell as both player and manager came at Ipswich Town.
He has been involved in more matches – 500 as a player and 413 as manager – than anybody else in the club’s history.Burley added: “We are grateful to the club for the support they have shown me and my family and I would ask that everyone is respectful of our privacy at this time.”Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna commented: “This club has had some brilliant managers and George is right up there as one of the very best.
