Hogmanay hit-and-run horror as pensioner mowed down by driver

A pensioner has been killed in a horror hit-and-run incident on Hogmanany.The 70-year-old woman, who was a pedestrian, was struck by a car on Barrhead Road in Paisley at around 7pm on Tuesday.She was pronounced dead at the scene, with detectives issuing an appeal for further information after the car involved fled the area.The white vehicle is suspected to have sustained damage in the incident and police are urging people to be on the lookout for a car matching its description to assist them with their inquiries and locate the driver.The collision happened just east of the junction with Ladykirk Crescent, in the Loanend area of the town.

Inquiries are now ongoing to establish the full circumstances that led to the crash.Pictures from the scene show a section of the road, largely a residential area, cordoned off.

A heavy police presence was seen as investigations into the horror crash began, with several officers and police vehicles present.A blue forensics tent was erected next to the footpath at the side of the road to keep the scene secure as officers began to piece together what happened. Detective Inspector David Tomlinson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died and everyone affected by this tragic incident.“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed anything or believes they saw, or may have dashcam footage, of a white-coloured car on the road prior to the collision to get in touch.“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who thinks they have seen a car matching this description after the collision which may have had damage.
