HMRC issues warning to every UK employer and urges all workers to check their rate of pay

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has released some of the most outlandish excuses used for not paying the legal minimum. During the last financial year- 2020 to 2021 - HMRC helped more than 155,000 workers across the UK recover more than £16 million in pay which was owed to them by their employer, and also issued more than £14 million in penalties.

HMRC is now urging all workers to check the hourly rate of pay they are actually getting paid, and to look at any deductions or unpaid working time.

They have also shared some of the most ridiculous excuses employers have given for flouting the law and not paying staff the legal minimum wage they are entitled to.These include: Steve Timewell, Director Individuals and Small Business Compliance, HMRC,.
