Highway Code warning for smart motorways with fines of up to £2,500

Motorists could be at risk of a fine of up to £2,500 and three or more points on their licence for not paying attention to smart motorways signs.

All-lane-running (ALR) smart motorways make up around 13 per cent of England's motorway network. They use different traffic management methods in a bid to reduce congestion and increase driver capacity.

One key feature of smart motorways though is that they frequently use variable speed limits to help control the flow of traffic.

These speed limits often vary from the national motorway speed limit of 70mph which means drivers should pay special attention to smart motorway changes and not assume the national speed limit is always in place.
