The painful condition occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed - usually by the expanding uterus, the fetus' head resting directly on the nerve, a shift in gravity by the growing baby bump, weight gain and fluid retention or a herniated or slipped disc.
This can result in sharp, shooting pain, tingling or numbness that starts in the back or buttocks and radiates all the way down the backs of the legs.
