A heartbroken Scots family have issued a mental health plea following the sudden death of a talented young Ayrshire footballer.

Robbie Meiklem, who played for Girvan FC's Under-20s development team, passed away at Ayr Hospital on Saturday, September 23.Dad Rab Meiklem shared the devastating news on social media as he paid tribute to his son who he described as a 'loving, caring young man.' The dad also issued an emotional plea to parents to 'cuddle your children tonight and tell them you love them' following the death of his son who gave off 'no signs or clues' that he was struggling with his mental health.

Robbie had spent three days on life support before the family made the difficult decision to switch it off. Writing on Facebook, Rab said: "Sadly on Saturday night after a wonderful day at the races my son Robbie Meiklem took his own life. "Robbie was a lovely caring young man who was loved by his mum and dad, sisters, gran and papa and aunties and uncles.

Robbie never asked for anything but was given everything. "He was well mannered and respectful to everyone he met in life. We the family are all struggling to come to terms with what has happened."Following his wishes the family had Robbie's organs donated which they say saved the lives of six others.
