Prince Harry and Meghan Markle "underestimated the backlash" they would receive following the release of the Duke's tell-all memoir, Spare, which is likely to explain their recent radio silence, according to a royal expert.The couple's bombshell Netflix documentary, which came out at the end of last year, stirred up a lot of controversy as the Sussexes made a series of shocking allegations against the Royal Family during the six-part series.Harry then appeared in multiple television interviews to promote Spare before it was released, which saw him take numerous swipes at members of his own family, resulting in a backlash against the pair, despite the huge success of his memoir.Since then, they have largely remained out of the public eye and have only been pictured together on a few occasions, the Express reports.Royal author Pauline Maclaran, professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway University in London, believes the backlash they received following Spare has led to their unusual silence for most of the year.
She told Daily Express US: "They probably underestimated the backlash, particularly towards Harry's book."People read that and although it was a best-seller, it didn't really promote him to any heights in terms of people giving him accolades"I would imagine all of that would have shocked them but one would presume they have retreated.
