The first official trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has gripped fans online after it was shown at the Oscars on Sunday. The long-awaited remake is set for a May 26 release after a string of successful reenvisionings from Disney, including Cruella, starring Emma Stone; Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent franchise.
During Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony, which also saw Michelle Yeoh walk away with the best actress award, the film’s leading stars, Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy took to the stage to introduce the trailer.
Halle plays the red-haired singing mermaid who dreams of a life on the land, while Melissa steps into the shoes, or tentacles in this case, of sea witch Ursula.
The trailer plays out like the 1989 animated original, with Jonah Hauer-King’s Prince Eric falling into the sea during a storm.
