Brits ate out nearly 11 million times last week after the government launched its Eat Out To Help Out scheme to help boost the ailing economy, it has been claimed.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has set aside around £500 million to pick up half the bill for diners who patronise restaurants during 13 days in August.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the month, the Eat Out To Help Out scheme means that people can get 50% off their bill, up to a maximum of £10.

The deal excludes alcoholic drinks. The official figures are due to be released on Tuesday, but The Sun reports the ploy was used 10,540,394 by hungry Brits in its first week.
