I am very hypercritical of it.”“The Act” dramatized how Gypsy Rose’s mother, Dee Dee was accused of abusing her daughter by fabricating illnesses and disabilities due to Munchausen by proxy syndrome, a psychological disorder in which parents seek sympathy and attention through the exaggerated or made-up illness of their children.The show also followed how Gypsy Rose asked her boyfriend to kill her mother.
In 2016, Blanchard pleaded guilty to murder for her role in killing her mother along with her then-boyfriend, Nick Godejohn — who is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole plus an additional 25 years for armed criminal action.
Gypsy Rose was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released from prison in December 2023 after eight years, on parole.
