Veneno” and producers of “Cardo,” have joined forces with Movistar Plus, the pay TV/SVOD of Telefonica, to develop and produce a new series, “La Mesías.”Presented on Tuesday in Madrid, like “Veneno,” the series has been written by Los Javis – as they are popularly known in Spain – and, according to Javier Ambrossi, the scale of the series marks the natural “next step” in the growth of Suma Content. A Movistar Plus original series, the series will be written, directed and produced by Ambrossi and Calvo and made in collaboration with Suma Content, their new production label launched last year.  Movistar Plus International will handle international distribution of what rates from the get-go as one of the hottest Spanish series which will be brought onto the global market this year. According to a synopsis read out by Javier Calvo at the presentation, “La Mesias,” described as a family thriller, turns on Enric, who is heavily impacted by a viral video of a Christian pop band made up of five sisters. Enric himself, the synopsis says, is still traumatised by a childhood marked by religious fanaticism and a mother with delirious messianic ambitions.

Steve Coogan has accused Will Smith of “appalling arrogance” after the actor slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. On Friday (1 April), five days after the incident, Smith made the decision to step down from the Academy following reports he would face disciplinary action.

Smith tearfully explained his actions as those of a man seeking to protect his family from abuse – Rock had referred to his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness, even though she had recently made public a diagnosis of alopecia. Backstage, Rock declared himself “fine” and declined to pursue the matter. The Academy apparently asked Smith to leave the auditorium, but seemed satisfied by his refusal.

Jim Carrey declared that he’s retiring from the acting and comedy worlds. “I am retiring. I am being fairly serious,” he said in a new interview to Access Hollywood‘s Kit Hoover on Thursday, March 31. The 60-year-old didn’t say the door is closed for good on other projects though, explaining that he would consider a script that was “important for people to see.”

Sunday’s Oscar ceremony controversy has certainly led to comedians feeling a little on-edge after Will Smith took a joke from Chris Rock the wrong way because it concerned his wife Jada Pinkett Smith‘s shaved head leading to the Best Actor winner going on the stage and to slap the comedian’s face without any reaction from security or the people running the event. He went on to accept his award with most giving Smith a standing ovation.
