A green comet last seen near Earth tens of thousands of years ago is about to make its closest pass to our planet and is now visible in the sky.

The first sighting of Comet C/2023 E3 (ZTF) was made by scientists at the Palmora Observatory in California in March last year, when it began travelling from the far reaches of the solar system.Originally spotted in a mass of icy space debris known as an Oort cloud, the space rock can now be seen with the naked eye for the first time in 50,000 years, reports Wales Online.

As of now, experts say that the comet's appearance will be a dim, smudge like ray of light and this may change as it moves. However, you can get a clear view of the comet with a telescope or binoculars.

You can also download the StarWalk2 app for Android and iPhone that can help star gazers pinpoint the its location. The best time to view the green comet is just before sunrise.
