Graeme Souness is helping Rangers in the search for Michael Beale’s replacement.Record Sport can reveal Souness was part of the Ibrox delegation which met Frank Lampard in London last Wednesday as the hunt for a new manager entered the interview process.
Lampard was ruled out of the running following those talks but Souness is understood to be advising chairman John Bennett, chief executive James Bisgrove and director Graeme Park as they work their way through the remainder of the candidates.
The former Ibrox boss turned down the offer of an ambassadorial position at his old club earlier this season but has remained in contact with the board. And now his knowledge and expertise are being relied upon as the crisis-ravaged club attempts to recover from a traumatic start to the campaign.
Bennett and Bisgrove were heading back to London on Sunday night to accelerate the recruitment process, having spent last week drawing up a shortlist and holding preliminary discussions with the likes of Lampard and Yokohama Marinos boss Kevin Muscat. Now they’re arranging a final round of interviews with Ibrox hopefuls in the UK capital. Record Sport understands those sit downs begin today and should be concluded by the middle of the week.
