A new family was added to the roster of television addicts on Gogglebox on Friday 4 October, and their first appearance divided viewers of the popular Channel 4 series.
Michael and Sally and their sons Harry and Jake hail from Kent and were introduced in a new episode where they got to chat about quiz show Only Connect, the thriller series Nightsleeper and Netflix romcom Emily in Paris.
However, an interaction between the family early on in the episode did not go down well with some viewers. Michael told his teenage sons they could have been driving since they were 16 years old if they had chosen to, as they would have been able to obtain agricultural driving licences to drive tractors on the family farm.
Jake then scoffed: “I can go and pick up my girl on a tractor.” Some fans of the show decided this exchange meant the family were “posh” and took to social media to complain. "Posh folk aren’t really for #Gogglebox well apart from Giles and Mary” wrote one viewer, while another asked: “Why add yet another posh family?" One fan decided teens Jake and Harry reminded them of Dawson and Pacey from 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, writing “I knew I’d seen these 2 before” alongside a photo from the classic show, while a fourth described the family as “The new waitrose family on #gogglebox.” Happily, some viewers were pleased to meet the new arrivals to the Gogglebox team and defended their inclusion. “Reading some posts, Don't like the new family, no newbies, etc.
