GMP have issued a statement after video footage appeared on social media of a young man being struck by an officer. In the clip, the man is being pinned to the ground by three officers.

One appears to punch and then slap his head three times. The Manchester Evening News understands that prior to the incident in Bolton town centre, police had been trying to arrest an associate of the man on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.

As they they did so a man grabbed the head and neck of one officer from behind. The same man then repeatedly ignored instructions from police to move away from them as they made the arrest.

On several occasions he moved towards the officers and eventually a female officer who felt threatened by him used a pava spray to make him retreat.
