Dr Hilary Jones warned why people who did not have coronavirus symptoms should not visit testing centres, as he spoke on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.
Amid a shortage of Covid-19 tests in the UK, he revealed NHS staff were having to self-isolate for 14 days without knowing if they have the virus or not if they experience symptoms.
Many testing centres across the UK are seeing huge queues of people, as the lack of testing kits has encouraged many to seek testing elsewhere.
But Dr Hilary explained why this was not the best idea, and why the NHS staff needed priority amid fears a second wave could be looming.
