Girvan’s conservation area has been extended following a public consultation. South Ayrshire Council has adopted a new Conservation Area Appraisal for Girvan in a bid to “protect and enhance” important buildings in the town.

Additional sections of Dalrymple Street, Bridge Street, Henrietta Street and High Street have been added to the conversation area while a small change has been made at the site of the former Baptist Church on North Park Avenue. The appraisal also supports the Girvan's Story regeneration project which aims to invest in the town’s historic environment, promote community heritage activities and boost employment through traditional skills training.Kevin Braidwood, director of housing, operations and development at South Ayrshire Council, said: “The appraisal will help preserve the heart of Girvan and will be used to guide any future development.“Residents are keen to protect the character of the town as well as restore historic buildings and we are very supportive of this ambition.“The change to the boundary means that more iconic buildings will be able to attract and secure funding to preserve them for future generations.” Read next: Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
