A gamer obsessed with Taylor Swift drowned while searching for the pop star at a beach in New Zealand, a coroner has found. Stephen Kapeli, 26, died at Takapuna Beach in April 2017 after being granted an hour of unescorted leave from a mental health facility.
He's believed to have left the acute mental health unit at North Shore Hospital in Takapuna at 4.30pm on April 5, 2017 and a search was launched when he did not return an hour later.
His body was discovered by a dog walker six days later on Takapuna Beach. During an inquest into his death, coroner Sam Herdson ruled Kapeli, who suffered from bipolar disorder, did not take his own life.
