The Italian broke his ankle in the Carabao Cup win over Manchester City, and is seen as one of the major reasons for Spurs' recent drop-off, especially with how specific a role Ange Postecoglou has for his goalkeepers.
Forster's poor ability with the ball at his feet has drawn scathing criticism, including from Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
The nadir was two howlers in the 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals last month. The club have been searching for an alternative since Vicario required ankle surgery in November after not signing a new No 2 in the summer.
