Four taken to hospital after chase ends in serious crash - the police watchdog is investigating

Two of the casualties were seriously hurt. The police watchdog has now launched an independent investigation into the incident.

A police dog handler in a van is believed to have been involved in a pursuit before the crash happened at the junction of Yew Tree Road and Mauldeth Road West in Withington at around 3.52am on Wednesday.

A witness has described seeing police chasing someone down an alleyway. Firefighters used cutting gear to free three casualties trapped in a badly damaged taxi.
