A former Manchester United assistant manager is likely to be leading the Australian national team during their crucial World Cup qualifier with Vietnam on Thursday.

Rene Meulensteen was the assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson for five years between 2008 and 2013 before a poor spell as manager of Fulham in December of that year.

Since his time at Craven Cottage, Meulensteen spent time at Philadelphia Union, Maccabi Haifa and Kerala Blasters before becoming the assistant for the Socceroos after the 2018 World Cup.

Current Australia boss Graham Arnold is sidelined with Covid-19 meaning the Dutchman is likely to be in charge for the side's home fixture tomorrow morning UK time.
