reports.The 66-year-old was found guilty of corruption at a Paris court.Prosecutors sought a four-year jail sentence but he was ordered to serve a year in jail.This is the first time in France's modern history that a former president has gone on trial for corruption and is the first time a former French President in recent history has been given actual jail time.Mr Sarkozy, who was President between 2007 and 2012, intends to appeal the sentence.He denied any wrongdoing and claimed he had been "dragged through the mud" for six years and had "never committed the slightest act of corruption."However, a court in Paris ruled otherwise as it found he had offered a post in Monaco to judge Gilbert Azibert in return for information on another.
