Five symptoms of deadly 'sloth fever' virus which has hit Europe for first time ever

A sloth borne virus which spreads through insects has been confirmed to have been found in Europe for the first time.The deadly Brazilian virus, which is officially known as Oropouche, has been located in Spain, Germany and Italy with 19 recorded cases in Europe in the past two months according to the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).The infection, which originates from pale-throated sloths found in tropical rainforests of northern South America and is spread through midges and mosquitoes, has already caused two fatalities in Brazil.There have been no confirmed cases of sloth fever in the UK as of yet and the chances of it ever reaching Britain or Northern Ireland remains very slim.It's also worth noting that 18 out of the 19 cases in Europe had a travel history to Cuba, and one had previously visited Brazil, meaning it's believed they all picked up the virus outside the continent.However, health experts are remaining cautious and have warned that it is vital to stay vigilant by being aware of the symptoms and knowing when to seek medical advice.Here's everything you need to know about the virus..

Anyone with an Oropouche infection is likely to develop a number of symptoms according to a pharmacist but the most common one is a sudden high fever.

Pharmica 's superintendent pharmacist Carolina Goncalves told the Mirror that the virus can cause a body temperature of between 36.5C and 38C.

Other common symptoms of sloth fever include headaches and persistent body aches.Ms Goncalves explained: "Oropouche fever can also cause severe headaches affecting the forehead, temples and the back of the neck as a result of the meninges [the protective coverings of the brain and spinal cord] becoming inflamed."Oropouche fever
