First picture of pensioner killed in Isle of Skye crash as tributes paid to local shinty legend

A pensioner who died in a car crash on Skye has been named locally as Donnie Martin. Emergency crews raced to the two-vehicle collision on the A87 Dungevan Road, Portree, at 3pm on Thursday, May 5.

Medics attended, however the 65-year-old sadly died at the scene.The passengers of the other vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Mr Martin, a leading figure in Scottish shinty, has been honoured for his involvement in sport on the island for the last 50 years.

The pensioner was named as Chieftain of Skye Camanachd earlier this year.He had been a player for the club in his school days and continued to play into his forties.Between games, he coached youths, became a first team manager, goal judge, referee then committee member.It is understood that all shinty on the island will be postponed this weekend as a mark of respect.Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the fatal event.They are also appealing to anyone with any information on the crash to come forward.Sergeant Neil MacDonald of North Road Policing said: “At this time, our thoughts are with the deceased’s family and friends."We are continuing with enquiries to establish the full circumstances.“We would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dash-cam footage that may help with our enquiries to get in touch.”Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1980 of Thursday, 5 May, 2022.
