This shocking footage shows a litter-strewn train carriage from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield. The video, sent to Yorkshire Live by a customer on board the 23.13 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield on Saturday (March 19), shows a number of "tea making items" scattered across the carriage's floor.

TransPennine Express has since apologised to commuters who were forced to sit in the carriage despite forking out for a first class ticket.

TPE said it believes the litter and "items of catering stock" had been thrown around the carriage by passengers. In the video, empty straw wrappers, cups and napkins can be seen strewn around the carriage, with commuters having to step over it as they depart.

One passenger on board the train on Saturday night said: "It was an absolute mess. I could not believe the state of it. This was the last train of the day from Manchester to Sheffield but I still would not expect it to look like that. In response, a spokesperson for TPE said the messy carriage did not represent "the standard of cleanliness we usually provide", YorkshireLive reports. "It is really disappointing to see one of our train carriages being treated in this way with litter and items of catering stock being thrown on the floor by rail users," they added.
