Andy Berry tried to avoid a series of roadworks and then got lost as his sat nav took him on a detour through winding country lanes near Knutsford in Cheshire.
Mr Berry, the duty National Interagency Liaison Officer (NILO) for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service on the night of the attack, has previously blamed a 'massive breakdown in communications' for the two hour delay in getting firefighters to the scene.
