The lawyer for the family of a teenage boy who took his own life just 48 hours after being remanded in prison has demanded safeguards protecting children in Scotland's criminal justice system be probed.William Lindsay, 16, killed himself in his cell at Polmont Young Offenders' Institution, Stirlingshire, in October 2018 despite having been flagged up as a suicide risk.

His mother, Christine, has already described his death as "state sanctioned murder". The tragedy came only four months after Glasgow University geography student Katie Allan, 21, also took her own life at Polmont, while serving a sentence for dangerous driving while drunk.

A joint fatal accident inquiry into the deaths, expected to last up to six weeks, is to start hearing evidence at Falkirk Sheriff Court in the New Year.

At a preliminary hearing today lawyers for Mr Lindsay's family submitted that it should cover not just the Scottish Prison Service's care of youngsters in its junior jails, but also the system that led to a child like Mr Lindsay being there in the first place.
