Face coverings to be mandatory in taxis from Thursday - and for shop and pub staff from Monday

Passengers in taxis and private hire cabs will be required by law to wear face covering from Thursday. The changes in the rule will also make the wearing of these coverings a requirement for people working in pubs, restaurants and shops.

Customers in hospitality venues will also be forced to wear face coverings from Monday - unless they are seated at a table for food and drink.

Many shops and taxi operators already require passengers to do this - but from Thursday failure to follow the rules could result in a fine.

The Governement has previously changed the rules on mask wearing several times. Last month after demands for a U-turn ministers decided secondary pupils would have to wear face coverings in school corridors in local lockdown
