Lewis Hamilton proved to the rain master at the Red Bull Ring, taking pole position on a soaking wet track in Austria. The reigning world champion was over a second ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen who spun at the last corner on his final flying lap.
The big surprise was Carlos Sainz who put his McLaren onto the second row of the grid, just ahead of Mercedes driver - and last week's race winner - Valtteri Bottas.
The hour-long Saturday session had been delayed by 45 minutes due to torrential rain which had also caused the cancellation of the morning’s practice session.
Once the cars were out on track, it was Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who set the fastest time of the first session which was ended 13 second early after Alfa Romeo’s Antonio
