A former senior GMP police officer accused of strangling his partner told a court she hit him during a row at their home in Whitworth.

Mark Warner, 57, denied squeezing on his partner's neck during the argument on July 27, 2022. Speaking from the witness box at Preston Crown Court today (August 21), the former chief inspector for Manchester city centre, Longsight and Moss Side, said he believed he was being 'set up' by his partner, who was recording the row on her mobile phone.

Days earlier, the court heard how he had proposed to the woman in an attempt to save their relationship, but had been turned down.

Warner and his partner moved into the home, which they had bought together, in January 2022 after a challenging time in which two previous house purchases had fallen through.
