Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin has hailed the club for bringing in Celtic hero Gordon Marshall in as goalkeeper coach, saying he was the “stand-out candidate”.Marshall, 60, is the latest piece in a behind-the-scenes shake-up that saw former Motherwell youth guru Gordon Young replace Academy director George Cairns, while ex-Celtic and Dundee United star Charlie Mulgrew is under-18 coach. But Rankin is thrilled to have experienced Marshall, who also had spells with Falkirk, Kilmarnock and Motherwell, and coached at Fir Park, Aberdeen and Queen of the South, at the New Douglas Park club, where he will be assisted by Dean Lyness.Rankin said: “Seref Zengin [CEO], John Brown [chairman] and Gerry Strain [director of football] have been in for a year now, they have their own ideas of what they want to do, and there’s a lot of off-the-pitch stuff with Gordon Young coming in, George Cairns leaving, and different things happening behind the scenes over and above that – there are different under-18s coaches as well.“Me, personally, I’m delighted to get Gordon Marshall on board.

Brian Potter moved on [to Livingston], and to get someone with his experience and career to come in and help our goalkeepers is brilliant.“For Deano to go into a coaching role alongside Marsh and help him will certainly help him and his pathway.“But Gordon Marshall, I wanted to try and get someone in who had experience that could help us, but also help our young goalkeepers, and Marsh was the stand-out candidate for me.“As soon as we got back our holidays, we asked if he could come in and speak to us, and he’s been in and helping the goalkeepers already.”Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onX via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the
