Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden secured the three points for Pep Guardiola's side, as United netted twice late on to ease the extent of their hammering.
United found themselves down by four goals at half-time but managed to 'win' the second-half against a City side who had taken their foot off the gas by then.
A late double by Anthony Martial at least managed to take the slight edge off the emphatic defeat, but Ten Hag did not use it as an excuse to look beyond his side's pathetic display.
