England captain Owen Farrell is facing a lengthy ban after a "shocking" red-card incident in Saracens' defeat to Wasps on Saturday.

In the 61st minute of the match, the 28-year-old swung his arm into the neck of Charlie Atkinson, leaving the 18-year-old Wasps man on the floor requiring medical treatment.

With the scores level at 15-15 at the time of the incident, Saracens went on to lose 18-28 without Farrell on the pitch for the final quarter.

And they may be without their talisman for some months after what 2003 World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio described as an indefensible tackle. "We know Owen plays hard, he plays on the edge, but that is bad, and he will get a lengthy ban", he told BT Sport "We know it's been a problem with Owen.
