Malone had planned to kill Dawn, trying to get her to take her own life with a lethal dose of heroin in sickening scenes. He was angry with her for making a statement to the police about his dodgy dealings, and he decided to make her pay.
But he was thwarted by his fling and Dawn's stepmother Harriet Finch, only for him to bounce back up and try to attack them both.
It's then that a terrified Dawn picked up his gun and shot him, killing him - with her and Harriet then attempting to cover up the crime.
